Traditionally, we pause three times a day to pray: "The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary..." Bells ring, conversations stop, and ordinary life is interrupted by the remembrance of the Word that became Flesh. For many of us, this practice is forgotten in our noisy modern lives.
When I designed my Angelus, I wasn't thinking primarily about decoration or even the practicality of such a thing; I just wanted a reminder. A framed print hanging somewhere in the house does something that a digital reminder cannot. A child asks what the words mean, a guest pauses to read it, a tired parent notices it while passing by. Sacred art doesn't replace prayer, but it can help create a home where prayer is easier to remember.
That's the hope behind most of my art, really: not simply that it looks beautiful on the wall, but that it might help someone lift their mind to God for a moment in the middle of their ordinary day.
As we move throughout the year celebrating at least one Marian feast per month, it's always a perfect day to revive the tradition of the Angelus in your home, or to decorate it in Mary's honor.
